My original take on the AVcon poster and mascot design, with a fantasy take on the 'Heroes and Villains' theme. I still have to fix the typing and lettering later, so the finished version should be more polished than the ones here.
And if anyone's wondering about Ayvee's weird looking shield, it's based on a spaceship to try and complement the 'space invaders' logo. The rest of her design is pretty 'classical' anime Valkyrie look.
As for Switch, I just wanted to give him some manscaping. So he's got pecs. And contact lenses (not visible, of course) instead of the goggles.
Prints will be available at Adelaide's AVcon (25-26 July 09), so swing by if you have the chance.
Blackadder: "Here lies Edmund Blackadder, and he's bloody annoyed!" (contemplating death by General Melchett's stupidity) (From Blackadder Goes Forth, Ep 1, Captain Cook)
I think it's just the classical association to the images of angels and demons - angels have feathery bird wings and demons have leathery bat wings.
However, not all feathery wings are directly associated with good - fallen angels and demons often have feathery wings that are ragged and/or black, in this case the good/evil association is achieved through colour.
As for leathery wings, well, bats and reptiles aren't exactly associated with 'good' in most cultures, unlike feathery wings which one can associate with more 'elegant' birds like swan (white) or eagle (brown).
Yes, but in the view of ancient mythologies, birds such as swans, hawks, and eagles represent strength and beauty, whereas bats, with their rat-like face and nocturnal habit are far scarier to those people who, after all, believe in vampires, witches, and flat earth.
Theoretically I don't think we can really sprout wings as extra limbs, but over the course of evolution if it is somehow advantageous then in a few million years our arms may become wings (just like birds and bats , we can only have 4 limbs). But then we'll have difficulties using chopsticks, since most of our fingers have become a part of our wings.
But I do agree that if we do have wings it will most likely be leathery - the biggest possibility of feathery wings come from evolution of hair into feathers, and we don't really have that much hair compared to other animals.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article.
In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
A Zen feature for you restless souls out there. A collection of specially selected photographs from nov - des, show them some love And remember, being an artist is not just about producing art, but about appreciating other peoples artwork to

Bats eat nearly their body weight in mosquitos every night where I am from, a very good thing in my book.
The biggest thing I see birds do is taking a crap on my car, not so good.
Besides physically speaking mammals, like humans, could theoretically sprout leathery wings more easily then feathered, and I want wings of my own
