First submission in more than a month, since I haven't been doing too much CGing lately.

Originally intended to be a fanart of Aoi Umenoukouji from Virtua Fighter, I realised it didn't realy looked like her (not that too many people would know since no one play VF anyway) so I basicaly ended up adding all the usual things: Petals: check. Moon: Check. Fancy overdone kimono pattern that has totally no meaning: check. Yep, my usual formula.

Anyway, I'm an idiot for ignoring Virtua Fighter 4:Evolution all this time. I've only finally picked it up from the bargain bin last month (And to think I almost bought Street Fighter Alpha Collection instead, not that it's bad or anything), and I'm converted. It's the best 3D fighting game in terms of depth and balance, but unfortunately this is one game that is not for buton bashers so you'll be hard press finding someone to play against. Furthermore, another unfortunate thing about this series is that VF5 is already out in arcades but in Asia only and this series'll never go online because unlike other games such as DOA or even Tekken, VF can not be played with any kind of lag (official word: because it will feel like a completely different game).

I'm not sure what you mean that she doesn't look like Aoi. I think she looks perfectly fine.

Very beautiful! I love the attention to details in the background, and Aoi's dance is absolutely gorgeous.

Thanks, and yeah, I agree with you as I personally do think there's quite a few problems with this picture.

However, I also like to think that I've gotten a little better since I drew this, which is almost two years ago now ;)

This is really beautiful. You designed the background so awesomely detailed it scares me XD! I like how the piece is asymmetrical, also. Just...Beautiful designs everywhere! Hope you don't mind if I add you to my watch list ^_^ Otherwise, I shall take you off of it o.o

Actually the background itself didn't take very long at all (probably 20 minutes or so) since I used photoshop to make it. I've made a tutorial on how I did it, which can be accessed from my journal footer.

Lovely! Just plain lovely.Everything in this picture just flows right, and it reaks with elegance, which is what Aoi's characters is based on.
I also recently picked up VF4: Evo from the bargain bin, and I totally fell in love with it. Unfourtunately, my buddies refuse to touch it due to "Teh Bland Characters!"

and probably the fact that they'll get their butts handed to them on a platter when they play against you=p

I think the problem is that more people choose pretty graphics over actual gameplay (the Dead or Alive series comes to mind)

Well...I do remember beating one of them in like 8 seconds...

But I don't think it's really about the technical graphics of the game itself, as VF is either on par or better than many other fighting games. I think it's the fact that there aren't any flaming uber kicks-o-death, fireballs, and such other things that catch people's attention. One thing VF is not, is flashy.
It's not really that easy to learn nor master either. Some people who play fighting games are only in it for cheap thrills, and others mostly play 3d fighters like Tekken. Neither of these demographics warm up to VF that easily, they also make up a pretty large chunk of the non-hardcore fighting community.
But, it seems VF5 might be gaining more interest than it's predossesor, and the massive amounts of customization don't really hurt either. Hopefully, the US VF scene might grow a little bit (though I'm not reallly holding my breath).

Hey, at least you even get to talk about playing VF.

I don't think I've ever even seen anyone else play VF down under. I played my friends mostly on Tekken (they were mainly button-mashers), but you're absolutely spot on about the average gamer being interested mainly in the "fireworks"... and the fact that somehow they can just hit the buttons and something will come out. Even sidestepping in soul calibur was "too complex" for them.

I feel your pain, most definately.

I've only ever seen two people who play VF at all since the game came out. Everyone else who's even heard of it brush it off as because "it sucks". Which normally translates to them not beng able to land 10-hit combos like they do in Tekken. The only way your going to find anyone who regularly plays VF is if you move to Japan. It's sad that such a great game is ignored because it actually wants the player to be good at it.
For the most part, I tend to play Smash Brothers, and sometimes KOF. I would play SF3, but the SF Anniversary Collection keeps dissapearing every time I get the money to buy it...

Pardon me, hope I'm not intruding on this conversation but I couldn't help it, I'm also a huge fan of VF5. I'm totally hooked. It's such a shame that there's no online component to be able to play the game online against people from around the world. I'm sure they'll probably have some downloadable content to allow you to do so soon but hoenstly I'd rather just wait until the XBox 360 version comes out in the summer. I also suffer the same conditions that not many people here in my part of the US plays VF at all. Well I guess I'll just say that on the day online play arrives anyone feel free to hit me up on this site cause I would like to play against other people. I think that's a huge chunk of the fun right there AND the fact that since it does take practice you'll feel better after beating an opponent.
One last thing?....why can't the developers of the FV series use actual dialogue from each fighter's respective countries. Lion would speak French. Eileen would speak either Cantonese or Mandarin, Lei-Fei would speak Mandarin, etc. I think that would be an excellent touch to the series.
Sorry for writing so much it's just that the passion for writing take over me at times (^_^)

A fighting game NOT about button mashing? Dang, I'll have to check that out. I was starting to think things like Smash Bros. and Sonic Battle were the only things that could be played well with any other sort of strategy. I suck at button mashing. ._.

The pic is really nice, btw.
