I initially watched this show mainly for the "wtf" value, as it was made by Gainax whom I hated because of the emo crap that was EVA. But a few episodes in, I must say this is the most purely entertaining show I've seen in quite a while, with every episode always seems to be equal or better than the last. The first combining scene in ep 3 where he just slap the lagann on and combined by fluke, the daiganzan downing the daigunten in what looks like a crotch thrust of doom, and the battle against Teppelin where they crash into the giant hammer - Macross may have a giant spacehip that transforms into a robot, but Gurren Lagann have a battleship with arms and legs that looks like a giant sexual innuendo [link][link] (or maybe I need a psychiatrist). Even the recap episode has a nice touch, especially the ending sequence with the original storyboard which was simply beautiful.
The...... unusual mecha design took a while to get used to, but I actually like it as they are very original and expressive - it kind of feels like a cross between mechas and ..... I don't know, pokemon, maybe? mechas with a giant face as their body, sunglass-sword, giant drills - the last time I saw a mecha anime this weird (yet oh so entertaining) was G-Gundam. Things seems to be taking a more serious turn after halfway (where the story moves 7 years forward), but the action doesn't let up so I'm not complaining. Plus the grown-up version of the characters looks 100% better.
Anyway, this anime has currently overtaken Code Geass as my favourite show of this year. Code geass has a more interesting storyline, but Gurren Lagann is simply more entertaining.
To be truthful I only watch the first episode of the series just for the hell of it as well. Then after that I ended up getting hooked, just hope it's not going to have some weird ending like a lot of other Gainax produced animes.

I don't get a word of the rambling in your comments, and have never seen this series in question, but it's a good pic none the less.
It's good to see something I have never seen before, and the comment on the robot doing a pelvic thrust of doom is kinda funny.

Hopefully not, as I think they said they were going for a "happy" ending. But either way, judging from the 1st episode prologue it should be explosions all the way to the end
