What's the best way to start a webcomic?

Thu Sep 25, 2008, 7:11 PM
Hi all,

I'm just wondering if any of you have some tips on what would be the best way to start a webcomic? I've been contemplating that for a while, since I think that will probably give me a bit more freedom compared to simply submitting them on DA.

The thing is, I'm a total novice in this things, and although I've had a look at places like SmackJeeves, I'm kind of thinking whether it would be better to get a proper webhosting considering most of them provide templates anyway. I mean, I'm not going to do any fancy flash website, and after having a read on HTML coding it looks doable.

So anyone got any tips or advice they can share? I've never had formal computer training, so all my info comes from the internet which is probably not the most reliable source around.

By the way, did anyone here in Adelaide went on the City to Bay Fun Run last Sunday? I ended up with 1:13 which put me in around number 7000 out of ten thousand people. Doesn't do much for your self confidence, especially when you spend the bus ride back next to a 74 year old man who did it in 1:10. Nice old fella, but damn he's fit. I think this is probably the first time I even ran a full 12 km (well, okay, it's probably more jogging than running), but I certainly wasn't expecting a 74 year old man to beat me so easily. I think it was bad enough that I finished together with one of the senior professor in my workplace (who's probably in his late 40s). As expected, my feet was hurting for several days, got better yesterday, but then I played touch football last night and now it hurts again. I guess next year I'd probably have to put in some proper training, but I'd definitely do it again.

I started off doing my own hosting, but that ended up having issues and I sat around Comic Genesis for a few years. CG is good in that it archives for you and such but still gives you a fair amount of freedom in how you set up the site.

If you're going to do your own hosting and don't want to drown in site work, ComicPress may be worth looking into, as that's what I'm using now and despite some adjustments needed for IE6 friendliness in the least (ie.: they can read the site, but there's a chance i broke something somewhere. Fixed now, anyway), it's a very dependable system that does a lot of the work for you.

Honestly? I know nothing. Personally, if you have a comic going, I would just start a domain and find other places to advertise it.

Starting a domain can be pretty tricky. You might find a webhosting service, but all of them will cost money, or not be very good.

It is good to have both a SmackJeeves/ DrunkDuck/ ComicGenesis and a mirror on a domain. The SJ/DD/CG account is to get known, while the domain is to be more professional. It's tough to only have a domain since you'll just rely on yourself for readers.

As for more general advice, have regular deadlines and updates.

And if you have a feeling something will happen IRL to keep you from ending the webcomic, come up with a ending. It doesn't matter if its sucky, a deus ex machina, badly drawn, or even written out, just end it! I've seen too many up and coming web comics die because they stopped updating in the middle of the story. When you end, you can always retcon or make a sequel or something.

I'd suggest uploading very small portions of a thumbnail occasionally with a link to your web comic site to remind people that you have a comic site. I'm in a web design media production class currently, and I would reccomend just being simple with html for now. It's easier to change up and it will take less time to load. I haven't gotten to the programming yet, but if you need someone to run through and check links, just drop me a line :3

what kind of web comic is it (like is it your won story line or fan effected like the fans choose characters profiles and such). Cause sometimes that can be an interesting challenge and makes others feel involved

And what is wrong with a flash video or two especially if someone else makes it for you.

And at least you did the run man, i mean i could never do it at least not this year so from me it's well done. Besides if it happens again and some old guy tries to past you just slap on him a bit of C4 and detonate............. Sorry to much battlefield bad company (and right in the middle of a serious reply to) oh well i shall see if i can find you some help for your cmic anyway.

Well, I'm thinking of actually reviving and continuing my old "randomanga" one shot attempts. I don't think I can do anything fan affected since drawing a manga already takes too long as is, if I have to modify things continuously it's just not going to work. Plus, what the fan wants may not necessarily be what I want.

I was just thinkig if it's worth starting a webcomic site since that may actually give me a bit more motivation to actually finish them.

Well, I don't actually have any comic site yet. I'm kind of thinking of making one but I'm still working out whether it's worth doing, since it's hard enough finding time to draw these days.
