AVCON - Art Workshop

Sun May 24, 2009, 8:37 PM
Hi All,

For all of you in Adelaide, come to AVCON this year. We're going to have our first art workshop/panel in addition to the Artist Alley so it should be interesting.

Anyway, on to the workshop - we will hold two 1-hour sessions (one each day) in the afternoon. The presenters are Andrew Carpenter [link] , Anthea Wright ~Hierodulai , and myself :) . We'll be covering character drawing on Saturday, and colouring/CG on Sunday, although this may change depending on situation. Here's a draft program for the workshop (this may change later, but it should give people an idea):

Saturday: Anime/Manga Character Drawing
part 1: Putting flesh on stick figures - the basics of figure drawing
part 2: The eyes (and eyebrows, mouth, hands, clothing, etc) have it - Capturing a character's personality through design and expression
part 3: Enhancing a character's presence - poses, figures, composition, and body language.

Sunday: Colouring/CG
part 1: Using colours - More than just light and dark
part 2: Digital painting beyond MS paint - Photoshop, Painter, and GIMP basics
part 3: Sharing our bags of chips... I mean tips and tricks on digital painting.

So those of you thinking of coming into AVCon, come along to the workshop and let's make this a fun time for all. We can have some nice discussions, and maybe bring along some of your work so we can share and exchange ideas and tips on various things.

More update coming later.....

well I’m planning on going to avcon and will defiantly come to your art workshop only thing i can say is that I’ve been to one other how to draw anime/manga workshop and my only worry is that you are trying to put to much into 1hr what they did at my other one was give the attendees the choice of two out of the 4 or so and just focus on those rather than rush through lots of stuff in one hit but it is entirely up to you of course, I’ll be there ^^

One must learn to read and write.
Keep a journal faithfully.
Know the present. Know the past.
Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter.
Four Seasons in a year.
East, West, South, North.
In everything there is a purpose.

Sounds very interesting. I'm always keen on improving my art, so this should be good :3

One day, I'll think of something good to write here...

Good point, and that's a good idea, actually.

I kind of made the spiel based on a very general/wide ranging audience, some of whom may not have much drawing knowledge, so I thought a broad session would be more useful rather than an overly basic or in-depth discussion on one point (which is a bigger problem with CG as there's a lot of different softwares and methods people use)

But we are focusing on character drawing, so we probably won't be touching much on things like background and manga-specific issues like the various inking techniques and panelling.

Well, either way this is still being made at the moment - but I think your suggestion is an excellent idea - if most of the audience are those who already draws, then we can probably skip the super basics, so we'll play it by ear.
:iconserio555:
So what would you be cosplaying as? :D
