New Laptop's Great, but Vista Sucks

Tue Jun 16, 2009, 9:33 PM
I've just bought a new laptop last week, and I must say it feels great to finally be able to work in high res without photoshop glitching on me all the time. And it is oh so beautiful, the way painter and photoshop now simply do what I ask it to do, without me having to worry about saving every few seconds or thinking about making a cup of tea while waiting for it to finish whatever it's doing. And now I can actually use all the features of Photoshop - Not that I really need it, but it's a nice, warm feeling to know that it's there, ready for you to use should the need arise.

However, I have to say that I'm starting to hate Windows Vista already. One thing that really irked me was when I went to the Task Manager, and tried to end crashed programs manually. In XP, usually when you tell it to end a program, it just cuts it off there and then. In Vista, I clicked on 'end process'..... and nothing happens. Clicked again and again... and nothing happens. Nothing shuts down abruptly anymore.

Great, just great. The only thing I know regarding what to do in a crash other than turning the damn thing off, and it no longer works. So basically it looks as if they've taken the task manager, the major safety net in XP, the only thing that give you some semblance of direct control over programs.... and made it no better than the "X" button in the corner.

Thanks a lot, Microsoft. Thanks a F****** lot.

Well, you could always get process explorer from M$'s support site and it'll act accordingly, but most of your "future" problems are only going to increase as a result of Vista's poor implementation. I would suggest rolling back to XP 64bit, but unless there are drivers for your laptop in the 64bit format already, then there's no point to change. Same goes for software.

vista isn't that bad. you'll get used to it. usually when you go to end task it likes to first 'search for a solution' before just shutting it down. but i manage to end them when i want.

anyways...windows 7 is coming out soon. that'll kick ass.

Go for WIn7!!
(I've installed it 2 weeks ago on my ex-Vista laptop!)

it is simple. unless your laptop has atleast 3 gig of ram and a good graphics card it wont run. also when you bring up task manager it now doesn't shut it automatically cause it use to cause problems and bugs on xp, instead click the processes tab in task manager and end it through that as it stops it straight away

Thanks for the tip, that's pretty much what I did, I went to the processes and seleced the actual exe file that was running trying to shut it off. But sometimes it works, other times it doesn't, unlike XP where I could turn everything off including explorer and run them from scratch.

and I've got 4G ram and a video card with 1G inbuilt memory so I was hoping that would be enough even for running a memory hog such as Vista (with photoshop and painter concurrently running, too) but the first couple of times it still crashed a bit. but since then it's been ok, there were some moments where the computer was taking longer than what I expect to process things but photoshop and painter had not crashed since then.
